The Vindication of Estrogen

*This meeting has been postponed until March 10-14, 2021 in Memphis, TN

Generations of women have been denied hormone replacement due to the false statistical conclusions of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). Yet, in December of 2019, a 19-year re-analysis of the WIH hormone trials was presented in San Antonio. Twelve prestigious cancer societies demonstrated that estrogen therapy in healthy women reduces the risk of breast cancer by 23% and the risk of death from breast cancer by 44%. Balanced hormones and replacement therapies are critical for women’s well-being but a standard of care which misunderstands estrogen, especially in high-risk or breast cancer patients, had kept women from a higher quality of life and longer lifespan.
So, what went wrong? Devaki Lindsey Berkson MA DC CNS DCBN CAN, author of the breakthrough book Hormone Deception (McGraw-Hill 2000), has studied the WHI about-face, and will teach the history of the WHI and how it’s study design was fatally flawed, creating wrong information which influenced generations of physicians. Now human trials have shown the efficacy and safety of HRT even in breast cancer patients, and women no longer need to miss out on estrogen’s growing foundational roles of health.
Participants in International College of Integrative Medicine fall conference “Endocrine Ecosystem: Balanced Hormones and Reduced Toxicity” will understand the protective roles of estrogen and testosterone on breast tissue, and how any hormone, even Premarin, is better than no hormone replacement in a woman’s health history.
Dr. Berkson has been a leader in functional medicine, with an emphasis on the gut, hormones and the environment. She formulated Metagenic’s first female nutrient line for physicians. As a scholar at an environmental estrogen think tank at Tulane University, Dr. Berkson worked with top scientists that discovered “receptor physiology” and the health concerns secondary to the emerging epidemic of endocrine disruptors. Dr. Berkson has authored 21 books, several were best sellers. Her newest book on Oxytocin (not out yet) discusses the intimate action of oxytocin and estrogen and oxytocin’s unappreciated role in gut health.
You will learn about the long-term benefits of even a few years of HRT and the “timing window” of protection. You will learn the new thought on cells that initiate tumors not being driven by estrogen. We will discuss the history of estrogen, how tamoxifen is not just an estrogen blocker and why it works even in ER-negative breast cancer patients, and in many women raises the levels of endogenous estrogen. You will learn about the science behind HRT and BRCA gene positive patients. You will learn new findings from the WHI that show that hormones reduce crippling arthralgias and pain in aging women. You will learn about the new WHI findings that women over age 65 with higher levels of cholesterol live longer and healthier and the role of this in hormonal balance and well-being.
